    So, it’s important to know which windows work best with different designs.

    An Overview of the Most Common Architectural Styles

    American farmhouse (double-hung windows) – Since emerging in the Midwest back in the mid-1800s, the American farmhouse style has been interpreted several times, producing variations that remain true to its simple midwestern roots as well as design interpretations as elaborate as Victorian-style homes. Two-pane double-hung windows with colonial grilles go well with American farmhouse-style homes, although grille-less windows would work just as well.

    Colonial-style homes (double-hung windows) – This is the most popular architectural style in the country. Like American Farmhouse-style homes, double-hung replacement windows with colonial grilles are a common feature on the facade of colonial-style homes.

    Tudor-style homes (casement windows) – Tudor-style homes, which are known for their brick, stucco and exposed timber accents, often have clustered casement windows with diamond patterns – six or more panes are arranged to form these diamond-pattern grids.

    Prairie-style homes (casement windows) – Prairie-style homes’ focus on simplicity is evident in their flat roofs and open floor plans. Replacement casement windows are also a common feature in prairie-style homes. However, this focus on functionality doesn’t mean these types of homes are completely devoid of visual flair: their casement windows have simple grille patterns to avoid drawing attention away from their signature glass patterns.
