4 Window Safety Questions to Ask Yourself

The windows in your home protect you from harsh weather conditions, such as windstorms or rainfalls. However, they may also be the cause of accidents. For this reason, you must follow window safety protocols in case of emergencies.

Window Safety

Here are four window safety measures you should consider.

1. Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan?

In case of fire, your family should have an emergency escape plan. To be safe, make sure to practice it regularly. Keep in mind to include two avenues of escape from every room. If you have children, they may have to rely on a window to escape a fire. As such, it’s best to teach them how to safely use a window as an escape route in these situations.

2. Do Your Windows Have Safety Bars, Grilles or Grates?

Additionally, when planning a fire emergency escape plan, it’s important to determine whether your windows can be used as an escape. If they have bars, grilles or grates, they may be useless if they do not have a functioning release mechanism. Thus, be sure to consult your local fire department or building code official to understand proper window guard placement. They may suggest new windows with better safety features.

3. Do You Have Air Conditioners in Your Windows?

An air conditioning unit that is installed in your windows can block or hold you back from escaping through the window. For this reason, be sure not to install window unit air conditioners in windows you will need for escape or rescue in case of emergencies. Moreover, take note that you should have at least one window in each sleeping and living area that meets escape and rescue requirements.

4. Do You Keep Your Windows Open When Children Are Present?

When children are around, make sure that your windows are closed and locked to prevent accidents. If you need to open them for ventilation, make sure to open windows that children cannot reach. Don’t forget to remind the children to stay away from windows and patio doors to avoid injuries. It’s also important not to rely on insect screens. While insect screens provide ventilation and keep insects out, they do not prevent a child from falling.
