Double-hung windows are a favorite among many homeowners because they are easy to operate, have a traditional appearance, and are easy to clean. However, like all windows, double-hung windows have the potential to break — especially if they’re an older model and have been in use for many years. The most common problem with double-hung windows in Indianapolis homes is known as a “dropped window.” This is when the window slides down inside the frame rather than staying in place when you raise it.
In a “healthy” double-hung window, each window sash is connected to a balance shoe that keeps it in place within the frame. If the sash becomes disconnected from the balance shoe, you end up with a dropped window. There are really two ways to deal with this issue: you can try to repair the window, or you can have the window replaced.
If you have a screwdriver and some basic DIY skills, you may wish to try repairing the dropped double-hung window yourself. You will want to check your window warranty. In some cases, your repair work may void the warranty. Start by locating the balance shoe in the bottom of the window frame. It should be mounted into the side of the frame and will have a “U” shaped slot in it. Place a large, flathead screwdriver into this “U”, and turn it towards you until the open top of the “U” points towards you (or the inside of the room). This unlocks the sash balance.
With the screwdriver still in the “U” of the balance shoe, slide the shoe up the side of the frame until it is just under the sash. Then, turn it back to the locked position — where the “U” is completely upright. Slide the sash down over the balance shoe; it should latch onto the shoe. If it does not, you can slide the sash back up, tilt it inward as if you were going to clean the window, and slide it down over the locked shoe from that position.
If, during your DIY repair process, you notice that the shoe itself is broken, you should call in an expert to repair or replace the window. Balance shoes must be carefully installed to ensure they operate properly; replacing the shoe yourself may also void any warranty you have on the window.
