Updating Your Windows

Are you tired of those lousy, outdated windows that don’t match your decor? If so, we understand. Over the years, your style has changed; the decorations are new. photos have been replaced, and the furniture has changed, too. Now that everything else in your home is updated, you want your windows to match the look and feel of your home. Here is how you can update your windows.

Clean them up – The first thing you need to do before updating your windows is clean them up. We don’t mean dusting or decorating; we mean strip them down. Scrape and sand them in order to get them ready for a new coat of paint. Don’t hold back; you want to get all the old paint and worn wood off. Use a paint scraper or sander, and make sure you cover all sashes and window frames.

Fresh paint – After your window sashes and frames have been sanded and prepped for painting, go ahead and choose a color that will compliment your current style or theme. Neutral tones work great, as they go well with most colors and styles. Try not to choose a color that is too bright or bold, as you may decide you don’t like soon before you’re ready to re-paint your windows. Apply thin yet multiple coats of paint to the sashes and window frames of each window you are updating.

Hardware – You can really update your windows simply by replacing the hardware. When we say hardware, we mean specifically the locks and the hinges, but don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Are you using curtain tiebacks? If so, choose new ones that will better compliment your new style. The tiebacks will do a great job of framing your new and improved windows.
