Securing Sliding Windows: 5 Tips -Indianapolis

Sliding windows are the perfect choice along walkways and patios, and they’re definitely one of the easiest types of windows to open and close. Indianapolis home owners love the great view they get through sliding windows, and it’s hard to imagine a window style more fitting for those horizontal window openings. But with all of these benefits, there is one concern that comes up sometimes with sliding or gliding windows: security. You may worry about someone sliding the window open from the outside or even breaking the large glass panels to gain access to your home. Here’s the good news: there are plenty of ways to make your sliding windows more secure!

Remember to Lock Them

One of the main concerns with sliding windows is that someone outside could jimmy a piece of wood or a stick between the window and the frame and then slide the window open to one side. However, this is really only possible if you forget to lock the windows when you close them. So much of window security comes down to behavior. Make a mental note to always lock your windows – especially before you leave the house–and remind family members to do the same.

Keep the Drapes Shut

Another easy way to increase the security of any window is to close the drapes, blinds, or shades before you leave the house, especially when you’ll be on vacation or otherwise gone for days on end. When thieves cannot see through the window and into your home, they are less likely to attempt to break in. Select blinds or curtains that are easy to open and close so you can tackle this task quickly before heading out the door.

Put a Dowel In the Track

If you are really worried about someone sliding the window open from outside–perhaps if you have an older window that does not really lock well anymore – this tip will come in handy. Place a simple dowel or rod in the track, bracing it between the side of the frame and the more inward side of the sliding window. If someone tries to slide the window open, the dowel will prevent it from moving.

Choose Laminated Glass

This tip really comes into play if you are having new windows installed on your Indianapolis home. Since gliding windows incorporate more glass than other window styles, it is easier for someone to break in through that glass – but only if the glass is breakable. If you choose a stronger, more secure glass, like Renewal by Andersen’s laminated glass, intruders will have a much harder time breaking through the glass. The remnants of shattered glass will remain in one sheet, similar to what happens when you break a car’s windshield.

Keep Your Windows Updated

Finally, make sure you replace your sliding windows when they begin to show signs of wear. If the glass is loose in the frame, the sashes are beginning to deteriorate, and the locks are no longer working 100% of the time, it is time for some new windows. Replacement windows will be much more secure than your older, outdated windows. Plus, they’ll increase your home value!
