Replacement Windows, and Four More Ways You Can Help the Environment and Energy Bill

Energy, and how to use it efficiently, has recently become a hot topic among Americans, as well as many countries around the world.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, “Americans saved more than $19 billion . . . through choices they made with energy saving measures and energy efficient homes” (EPA.gov). That’s a lot of money! If you would like to make an impact, but are not sure where to start, here are a few simple tips to get you going.

  • Invest in ENERGY STAR home appliances. The government came up with an easy way for consumers to know which major appliances will save them, and the grid, the most energy – look for the ENERGY STAR label when shopping for new major appliances. Check with your local gas and electric company, you can often receive a discount from them when you buy one of these appliances as well.

  • Insulate your home. There are numerous ways a homeowner can insulate, varying from plastic rolls, to concrete blocks, to foam spray. Often the attic is a good place to start, but any unfinished walls, foundation walls, or even in between finished walls and ceilings could all be good candidates for insulation.

  • Seal your home with energy-efficient windows or doors.  Often older windows and doors are letting in air that can alter the temperature of your house significantly. Replacing your current windows for energy-efficient windows or patio doors could make a big difference on both the temperature in your home and your energy bill.

  • Clean all air filters and ducts regularly.

  • Use natural ventilation whenever possible.

These are just a few of the ways that homeowners can help the environment and their budget. We at Renewal by Andersen of Greater Michigan would love the opportunity to help you get started.
