New Replacement Windows in Indianapolis: Safety Options

We all want our homes to be safe, and when it comes to your Indianapolis home, safety means securing your windows against outsiders, as well as ensuring that small children and pets can’t escape. The issue of window safety has become more and more prevalent in recent years, and manufacturers have taken notice. That’s why there are tons more options for homeowners today, allowing you to choose the right type of locks and safety mechanisms to fit your needs.

Window Locks

The biggest change we’ve seen in window safety has to do with the way window locks work. Today, window locks are installed between the moving sashes, locking them against one another and preventing movement. By installing the lock this way, it is impossible to reach through a cracked window and force the locks open. In addition, this means that the lock is out of reach of small children so they can’t accidentally unlock the window.

Window Guards

Another important addition to replacement windows is that of window guards. Window guards, used mostly on single or double-hung windows, are designed to allow the window to open one or two inches, but no more. In order to open the window any further, you have to manually press down on the guards from inside while simultaneously lifting or sliding the sash. Most window guards are automatically active, so you don’t have to remember to put the guards in place each time you crack the window open. These guards allow you to crack the window open a few inches for fresh air without becoming a safety risk, and ensure that intruders can’t slide your windows open from the outside.

Screens

Screens are not designed to be a safety barrier, and cannot be expected to prevent a fall. Nevertheless, with screens in place, children and pets are far less likely to approach the window because there is still a visible barrier in place. While screens are not an active safety device, they should be installed wherever possible.
