Learning the Cincinnati Home Window Lingo

Who knew that there were so many complex terms and phrases used to describe replacement windows? As you prepare to purchase replacement windows for your Cincinnati home, you need to have a strong grasp of the industry jargon to ensure that you are getting a high-quality window product and installation. Here are some of the most important words to know:

Argon Gas: If you didn’t already know, window manufacturers fill the space between dual and triple pane windows with clear, odorless gas. This gas is usually Argon. It is used because it offers superior insulating qualities to ambient air or other gases. When the space is filled with Argon gas, it becomes harder for heat to transfer between inside and outside.

Casing: The casing actually refers to the decorative trim or molding that helps conceal any gaps between the window frame and the surrounding walls. Most casing is fairly plain, but upgraded casings can add a high end feel to a room.

Dual Pane Windows – Dual pane windows feature two pieces of glass separated by a spacer and some kind of gas filler. Dual pane windows are more energy efficient because they have an extra layer of insulation between the glass, rather than allowing the outside air to come into direct contact with the inside air through a single pane of glass.

Double Hung Windows: This term refers to windows that open vertically where both the bottom and top sashes slide open. Oftentimes, these windows are installed because they offer more flexibility and safety if you plan on having your windows open throughout the year.

Bay or Bow Windows: Bay windows are best recognized because they stand out from the front of a building with a large center panel and two smaller flanking panels. However, some modern homes have more of a rounded bay which includes arched windows. These are referred to as bow windows.

Frame: The frame is what actually encases the sashes and attaches to the walls of your home. It is made up of the head, sill, and jambs. It is important to remember that the frame does not hold the glass itself.

Sashes: The window sashes are the moveable parts that actually contain the glass window panes. Most sashes slide vertically or horizontally, but some sashes move on a crank.

Low-E Glass – Another phrase you’ll hear often is Low-E. This refers to the emissivity of the glass itself. Window manufacturers use a variety of glass treatment films that reduce the number of UV rays that are able to pass through the glass into your home. The better the Low-E treatment, the safer your house is from these UV rays.
