Knowing the Difference Between Replacement Windows and Window Replacement and Their Styles

It makes good sense to learn all you can about replacement windows when it comes time to go window shopping. On a square foot basis, windows are among the most valuable part of your house. Take your time to evaluate what you need and what you want from new windows.

You may be able to replace your windows into the existing frame. There is no reason to remove the interior casing and very little work to install.  This is a good way to upgrade your windows without changing its size or location.

If you need to enlarge the size of your window or change its style, this involves removing the entire window and casing down to the rough framing.

Speaking of styles, there are many to choose from. Here are some of the most popular styles along with their strong points and not so strong points.

  • Double Hung: this is the classic style that has been around for years. This traditional style is what makes it so popular. They work well enough, and you can lower the top part for ventilation. More modern styles offer better ventilation and without the obstructed view a double hung window has.

  • Casement: a casement window is the top choice in new homes and for good reason. They are exceptionally easy to use with a crank to open the window as much or as little as you want. This type of window opens like a door and has twice of the amount of breeze than a double hung. This style is more airtight than most. The only problem is they are particular of their placement.

  • Awning: awning windows tilt out when opened,  and when it rains you don’t have to worry about water getting in. They offer great ventilation and an unobstructed view, but once again awning window placement is particular.

  • Slider: works under the same principles as a sliding glass door. They offer more flexibility with placement, but has an obstructed view and less ventilation.
