It’s all about the Glass

It’s finally time for window replacements, and you’re not sure where or from whom you should get them. No matter what a window company tells you, there are a few things you should be aware of, and window glass is one of them.

The glass is one of the most important parts of the window. Not only does the glass keep weather and critters out, but it is also the most visible and noticeable part. Don’t settle on any window replacements; make sure your new glass is of the highest quality. Be on the lookout for the following glass features.

Low Maintenance – There is nothing worse than a dirty window. Dirt, fingerprints, and water marks on the glass can ruin a view and become distracting. In order to keep your windows clean, make sure the glass you choose is low maintenance. Glass that features a coating of titanium dioxide helps keep your windows clean and clear. Since titanium dioxide repels water, you get significantly less water spots and dirt residue. Titanium dioxide also blocks 83 percent of ultraviolet rays to help protect your furniture and flooring from fading.

Energy Efficient – Everyone wants to save energy and money, so make sure the glass in your future window will help you do just that. While some glass does nothing to prevent hot or cool air from traveling through it, other glass types are manufactured to stop air infiltration. Make sure you check out windows that are specially coated to block air flow. Inquire about energy efficiency before you decide to buy.

Insulated – Windows can only be as energy efficient as they are insulated. Well-insulated windows will be significantly less drafty and will block out street noise, as well. As a rule, double-pane windows are better insulated than single pane. If you are replacing your single-pane windows with double panes, you’ll notice the differences immediately. Newer double pane windows have a layer of argon gas injected between the panes to further insulate. The argon gas increases energy efficiency and noise reduction.
