Installing Blinds on Casement Windows in Your Indianapolis Home

Are you looking for a window treatment that offers privacy, is easy to operate, and also offers a bit of extra insulation in the cold Indianapolis winter? Blinds are a great choice. SomeIndianapolis home owners may be under the impression that you cannot install blinds on casement windows because the crank used to open and close the window gets in the way. However, this is not the case. Blinds are compatible with casement windows – you just have to install them a little differently.

The Outside Mount

The correct installation style when putting blinds on casement windows is called an “outside mount.” Essentially, this means the blinds are mounted outside of the window frame rather than between the two sides of the window frame. With an outside mount, the blinds hang down further in front of the window so the crank does not interfere with them.

Choosing the Right Blinds

Before you go about installing your blinds, you need to choose ones that are compatible with your casement windows. Thick, vertical wood blinds work well since the vertical panels are easy to push to the side, giving you access to the crank. If you really love horizontal blinds, make sure you choose ones that are easy to lift up and down. You’ll need to lift them to access the crank if you ever want to open or close the window. A style that you can push or pull straight up and down, rather than using a string, is a good choice. Blinds that operate on a string are not the best choice with casement windows since they can be difficult to manipulate when you need to access the crank.

Regardless of which blinds you choose, you will also need to buy a “top treatment.” This is a hanging element that you mount just above the window and hang your outside-mount blinds from.

Installing the Blinds

Once you have chosen the perfect blinds for your Indianapolis home, it’s time to hang them. Most blinds come with installation instructions, but in general, you’ll need these tools to complete the project:

  • A tape measure
  • A drill
  • A pencil
  • A screwdriver
  • A level

Start by measuring the exact width of your blinds. Then, use your tape measure to measure the exact same distance above your window, marking either end of the line. Install a bracket at each end of this line, and then use the bracket to hang the top treatment.

Once the top treatment is in place, you can position the blinds inside of it. Most blinds will just hook into the top treatment – often just towards its inside. When the window treatments are properly in place, you can pull them down (if they are horizontal blinds) or spread them out (if they are vertical blinds) to get the look you desire.

With your new blinds in place, you’ll get to enjoy some relief from the sunshine, a little more privacy, and an extra layer of insulation between you and your outdoors.
