Not sure if the windows in your home are as energy efficient as they should be? We don’t blame you. With so many new models on the market, how can you be sure that your home is protected from water and air infiltration? Here are some easy ways to determine whether or not you should replace them.
Check the U-factor– The first thing you should do, if you haven’t already, is discover the U-factor. U-factor is the measurement used to determine how insulated your windows are. The lower the U-factor, the better the material is at insulating your home from outside air and temperatures. Generally, anything under five is pretty good. To see how your windows are rated, you can either check with the manufacturer, consult online forums, or check to see if the number is written down on the window framing itself. Once you know the U-factor, go ahead and compare your window to others on the market.
Seal Your Windows – Once you know the U-factor, you’ll have a better idea of how efficient your windows are. Even still, you should test them. To do this, seal them with plastic and then use heavy curtains to block out any draft that slips around the plastic. It is best that you do this during the winter when you’re not going to be tempted to rip off the plastic and let the fresh air in. While your windows are sealed, take note of how your home feels. Are you more comfortable? Did your heating bill go down? If so, perhaps it’s time for new windows.

Are they happy with them or have most people replaced them for something more energy efficient? If so, perhaps you should consider replacing them, too.
