DIY Halloween Decorations

We know what you’re thinking: It’s not even October, and we’re already talking about decorating for Halloween? Yes, we are. The fall season is right around the corner, and if you don’t get started now, you’ll soon find that Halloween is far behind you. With that being said, here are some great DIY exterior decorating ideas perfect for the fast-approaching Halloween season.

Ghosts on the Porch – Let’s start simple, shall we? To decorate your front stoop or porch, why not make your own ghost friends out of old milk cartons? All you need are some clear holiday lights, some clean plastic milk jugs, and black permanent markers. Place the clear lights inside of the milk jugs and draw two large eyes and a black, open mouth on the jug. We recommend spray painting the cap and any other colored bits white so they don’t distract from the ghost-like effect.

House-o-lantern – This one is our favorite. Transform your home into a giant jack-o-lantern simply by turning your windows into spooky Halloween faces! You’ll need cardboard, pencils and markers, a craft knife, a glue stick, orange tissue paper, and a lamp. Cut eyes, a nose, mouth, and teeth out of the cardboard and fit it into your window. Cover the openings with orange tissue paper and place a lamp nearby to give the tissue paper that jack-o-lantern glow. For the complete list of supplies and step-by-step instructions, click here.

Giant Spider – Spiders can be a great addition to your porch — the bigger, the better. Make a giant spider out of a milk jug and foam piping, and you’ll have an impressive-looking creepy crawler before you know it! Here’s what you’ll need: a craft knife, a milk jug, black duct tape, foam pipe insulation tubes, two plastic eggs, and green tape. After covering the milk jug with black tape, start taping the insulation tubes the back of one side. Tape the middle of the tubes so that they form legs that stick out each side of the milk jug, which is the spider’s body. To bend the tubes to form “joints,” cut a small wedge out of the back of the tubing. Shape and tape to reinforce. Use the plastic eggs to form eyes and the green tape for detailing the body. Everyone loves a radioactive spider!
