Windows serve a few different functions. They let sunshine and air into your home, and when they are functioning properly, they close tightly to keep drafts and heat outside. The lifespan of a window can vary greatly. Inexpensive vinyl windows can fail within a few years, and wood windows’ lifespan depends on the maintenance you supply. Therefore, age is not a good determinant of window condition. Instead, keep an eye out for these six symptoms of house window problems in your Indianapolis home.
1. Condensation Between the Window Glass
Condensation on the inside or outside of the window just indicates that the air is humid — it does not mean your window is failing. You do, however, need to worry about condensation that appears between the two or three panes of glass that comprise the window. If moisture is accumulating here, it means that air is leaking between the glass and the sash. This is a common issue with cheap vinyl windows. The vinyl cracks after being exposed to changes in temperature, leading to air leaks.
2. Drafts Near the Window
Drafts occur when air blows in between the window sash and frame even when the window is closed. You may feel a cool breeze when you’re near the window on a chilly Indiana night. When it is hot and humid outside, you may even feel a hot, stuffy stream of air when you walk by the window.
3. Increasing Energy Bills
Sometimes, before you actually feel the draftiness, you will notice the increased energy bills that are a result of drafty, old windows. Your energy bills will slowly creep up over time, causing you to overlook this problem until it gets really bad. If you’re not sure whether your windows are driving your energy bills up, talk to your neighbors about their energy bills. If your neighbors with similarly sized homes are paying a lot less for energy, inefficient windows may be to blame.
4. Mold and Rot in the Window Frame
If you have older wooden windows, take a look at the frames and sills. If rot or mold are developing, it’s time to think about replacing your windows. Rot will soon cause the window to become loose in its frame, and mold can cause illness and allergy symptoms when allowed to grow unchecked in your Indianapolis home.
5. Difficulty Opening and Closing the Window
If a window has begun to deteriorate or sag in its frame, you may not be able to close, open, or lock it anymore. This is a safety and security issue, so you should look into having the window replaced with a newer, more secure window.
6. Rattling and Loose Window Glass
Take a minute to press on the glass portion of the window. It should feel stable and sturdy within the sash. If the glass moves at all, this means that it is no longer tightly sealed into the sash, which means you probably have air leaking into your home, too. Water may also seep in during a rainstorm, leading to additional rot and deterioration of the window sash and frame.
