Windows do not last forever. Over time, they begin to show signs of wear, and they also become less efficient. But how do you know when your windows are ready to be replaced? The best strategy is to take a close look at each of the windows in your Cincinnati home, assessing their condition. Here are five tips to guide you in this endeavor.
1. Stand in Front of Your Windows on a Windy Day
One of the most easily spotted signs of window damage is drafts blowing in through gaps between the window glass and sash. To assess for drafts, wait for a cooler, windy day, and then spend a little time standing in front of each of your windows. If you feel chilly air coming in from around the windows, this means they are no longer tightly sealed. Drafts make your home uncomfortable and they also drive up your energy bills, so it’s time to look into replacement windows once drafts start appearing.
2. Look for Chipped and Peeling Paint
Take a close look at the sash and frame surrounding your window. If you have older wooden windows, as are seen in many Cincinnati homes, the paint may be beginning to peel and chip. A little peeling paint is not necessarily a big deal since you can re-paint the windows to improve their appearance. However, if the windows are noticeably beginning to deteriorate beneath the paint, it may be time for new windows. Once the paint is compromised, moisture can really start getting to the wood and causing it to decay.
3. Evaluate Condensation and Mold Growth
Do you see any moisture or fogginess between the two panes of glass that comprise your window? Once condensation starts appearing between the glass, this means your window’s seals have been compromised. Mold may soon begin growing between the window panes or even around the outside of the window. Mold is not healthy to have in your Cincinnati home, and windows with failed seals are not very efficient — so this is definitely a sign you’re ready for replacement windows.
4. Test the Latches and Locks
Sometimes, your windows may look okay, but the locks and latches may no longer be functional. This can happen if the window shifts in the frame or if the material around the latch or lock begins to deteriorate. Test the latches and locks on all of your windows, and repair or replace windows that do not open and close properly. Non-locking windows are a safety and security risk.
5. Evaluate Whether the Glass is Secure
Press on each pane of glass, and make sure it does not wiggle around in the sash. Window glass that is not secure may be blown into your home during a storm. Loose glass also makes it easier for someone to break into your home through the window. This is a common problem not only with wooden windows, but also with vinyl replacement windows.
