You just had beautiful new windows installed, but how does the rest of your space look? To make sure your windows really shine, it’s important that your interior design complements them. You don’t have to completely remodel or hire a designer to achieve your new, unified look. Just follow these five design tips to complement the replacement windows in your Michigan home.
1. Re-Paint the Window Frames
Assuming you just had the window sashes replaced, your frames probably look a bit dated in comparison. A new coat of paint can fix that! Look for a semi-gloss or eggshell-finish paint, as this will do a better job of repelling dirt and stains over the years. Scrape away any loose paint, and then apply the new paint over the top. Make sure you pick a color that complements the color of your new window sashes. For example, if you have dark blue window sashes, cream or tan window frames will look lovely.
2. Upgrade Your Drapes
You need drapes that call attention to your windows and help make them the focal point of the room! Since your new windows are more energy-efficient than your old ones, you can afford to go with a more sheer drape rather than a thick, insulating one. Geometric patterns are very popular right now, as are solids. Consider choosing a pattern that incorporates the color of your window sashes to create a unified look.
3. Choose a Few Accents
You want your windows to stand out, but you also want them to look like part of the room. One way to achieve this is by decorating with small accents in the same color as your windows. If your windows have deep gray sashes, for example, you could place a deep gray area rug under the coffee table or choose deep gray frames for your artwork.
4. Remember the 60/30/10 Color Rule
When decorating your Michigan home, it’s easy to get lost in color selections. Too many colors in one room can be overwhelming, so remember the 60/30/10 rule. In other words, 60% of your room should be one color — that’s the color of your walls and maybe some furniture. Another 30% of your room should be a major accent color — that’s the color of your window frames and other furniture. Finally, 10% of your room should be a minor accent color. That’s a color you may incorporate touches of in little decorations like candles and artwork.
5. Pick a Theme
If you just want to do a little redecorating without completely overhauling your space, then pick a theme that coordinates with your window color. For example, if you have navy windows, you could pick a nautical theme. If you have pale yellow windows, perhaps a springtime theme would fit. Then, choose decor items to pick that theme and place them on shelves and on tables for an extra pop of pizzazz.
