5 Features to Look for in Cincinnati Replacement Windows

Replacing your windows is a big investment. Choose the wrong windows, and you may find yourself with leaky, inefficient windows — and an empty wallet. Why spend money on replacement windows that do not last and do not do their job well? Look for these five qualities in the new windows you choose for your Cincinnati home.

Composite Frames

Many lower-end windows are made with vinyl frames and sashes. Vinyl windows are marketed as a low-maintenance option for homeowners who do not want to stain or paint their windows. The problem is that vinyl is not very resilient when temperatures and humidity levels change, as they so often do in Cincinnati. Before long, the vinyl will warp and crack, creating gaps between the window sash and glass.

Steer clear of vinyl replacement windows, and instead opt for windows with frames made from composite materials, like Fibrex®. This innovative material does not require staining or painting, and it resists climate-related damage far better than vinyl.

Double-Pane Glass

Another common feature of cheap, low-end windows is single-pane glass. Single-pane glass works okay in very warm, mild climates. However, in Cincinnati homes, it is terribly inefficient and leads to high energy bills. Good replacement windows feature double-pane glass. The air between the two glass panes reduces heat transfer through the window, lowering your heating and cooling bills.

If you want to go above and beyond in terms of energy-efficiency, look for windows that have argon gas, rather than air, between the two panes. Argon is an even better insulator than air, making these windows a great choice in areas where winters can be cold and snowy.

Low-E Glass

Even though all glass looks about the same, there are different types of glass you can choose for your windows. One of your best options is low-e glass, like SmartSun™ glass. This type of glass has been sprayed with a thin layer of silver. It reflects heat waves, rather than letting them pass through the window. Plenty of light still comes through the glass, so you don’t have to sacrifice sunshine for energy-efficiency.

A Low U-Value

The U-value of a window is an indicator of its insulating ability. The lower the U-value, the more energy-efficient the window is. Windows that carry the Energy Star logo must have a great U-value, which makes it pretty easy to look for options that meet this standard. Keep in mind that windows with a high-quality frame material, like Fibrex, and low-e glass, like SmartSun glass, tend to have the low U-value needed for peak efficiency.

Grilles Between Glass

Grilles can transform the look of a window. Prairie grilles are perfect for windows on a more traditional home, whereas tall fractional grilles have a more modern appearance. In either case, make sure your replacement windows have grilles between the glass, rather than just on the surface. This makes for a stronger window and more durable grilles.

In addition to the qualities above, look for windows in a color that coordinates with the rest of your home and matches its architectural style.
