4 Common Indianapolis Window Problems and How to Fix Them

As your windows advance in age, you’re likely to begin experiencing some window problems. Some of these problems have pretty simple solutions, while others are difficult or impossible to repair.

Here’s a look at some of the most common window problems in Indianapolis homes –and also some tips for repairing or addressing them.

Stuck Wooden Windows

If you have wooden, double hung windows, you may find that they become hard to slide in the frames. This happens as the wood on the edges of the sash becomes worn and creates more friction. Exposure to moisture can also cause the wood to warp, making it tougher to open and close your windows.

To free stuck wooden windows, start by removing the window sash from the frame. Rub some candle wax along the edges of the frame and the sash; this should help the window slide more freely. If this does not help, your windows may be badly warped, and your best solution may be to replace them.

Loose Glass

When the glass loosens to the point that it rattles when you push on it, you can bet that cold air is seeping in, too! A good short-term solution is to press rope caulk into the crease between the window and the sash. If you’re comfortable using a caulking gun, you can use silicone caulk to fill this gap instead.

Broken Hardware

If you have hung windows, the latch that lacks the panes in place when the window is closed may snap or break. With casement windows, the crank that opens and closes the windows may break or the hinges may fail. Usually, replacing any sort of window hardware is as simple as unscrewing the current hardware and screwing a new piece into its place. The biggest challenge might be finding hardware that matches that on your other windows –especially if your windows are quite old. Reach out to window replacement companies in your area to see what they have to offer in terms of hardware.

Condensation On and Between the Panes

Condensation falls into two categories: on the inside of the window and between the window panes. Either is not ideal. Condensation between the panes is a sure sign that there is a leak and the window should be replaced. Condensation only on the inside of the window is an indicator that you have an issue with your Indianapolis home’s humidity levels. If you turn down your home humidifier or install a dehumidifier, you should find that this problem dissipates. Make sure you’re also using your bathroom and kitchen fans to eliminate the moisture that’s generated with you cook or shower.

If you’ve been having a lot of problems with your windows, your best solution may be to replace them, especially if they’re older than 10 years in age.
